Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County is celebrating 50 years in our community and we are thrilled to welcome them back to the Chamber in this momentous year!
The agency creates one on one and small group mentoring programs between adult volunteers and children and youth. Programs include the traditional Big Brother or Big Sister who is matched with a child, focusing on having fun while building resilience and self confidence. They spend 3-5 hours a week together. Our small group programs focus on healthy lifestyle promotion. The agency also runs a youth centre in Smiths Falls, serving up to 30 youth each night.
Founded in Carleton Place in the spring of 1973, the agency has been a long-standing Chamber member in Perth, Smiths Falls and Carleton Place, but took a hiatus during Covid as funds were very limited.
The agency has brought back long standing Executive Director Jennifer Miller, who was trying a different career for a few years, and is working to build more mentoring opportunities for children and youth.
“I have a passion for helping kids grow and blossom,” says Jennifer “This role helps me use my business acumen and my love for the power of mentoring in the same chair. Carleton Place & District Chamber of Commerce provides so many opportunities to meet other members and talk about what we do. We look forward to meeting everyone at events in the near future.”
